Audrey Lucy Tomberlin

On Friday, April 3, 2020, Audrey Lucy Stokes Batten Tomberlin, loving mother,
grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother and friend passed away
at the age of 91. Audrey was born on September 23, 1928 in Folkston, Georgia to Rubin Jason Stokes
and Flora Zell Hodges Stokes. She graduated from Saint George High School and
worked for BellSouth for 50 years. In addition to BellSouth, she was an entrepreneur
owning two beauty salons and various small businesses throughout her 91 years. She
married Horace William Batten in 1945 and they raised their three children, Horace
(Buddy), Larry and Kenneth, in Jacksonville, Florida. After the passing of her first
husband, she married Benny Tomberlin in 1957 and had their daughter Kim in
Melbourne, Florida. She moved her family back to Jacksonville in 1961 and resided in
Jacksonville, Florida for her remaining years.
First and foremost, Audrey was passionate about her family. She often talked about
her love of her family and the pride she felt in their accomplishments. She loved to
cook and cherished the time she spent with her big family during the holidays. She
especially loved having everyone together for Thanksgiving and Christmas, making
her heart and house full of love and laughter. She loved Jesus and spent a lot of time
in worship and reading His word. She enjoyed talking about her faith and sharing
God’s promises with her family and friends.
Audrey is preceded in death by her parents Rubin and Flora Stokes, three sisters Eula
Mae, Mildred, Elsie, brother Julian, husband Horace Batten and husband Benny
Tomberlin. She is survived by her sister Evelyn Johnson, and four children: Horace
“Buddy” (Patricia) Batten, Larry Batten, Kenneth (Linda) Batten and Kim (Roy)
Newbern. Grandchildren: Lori Johnson, Rusty Batten, David Batten, Kevin Batten,
Cade Batten, Brooke Batten, Chris Tomberlin, Nicole Glasgow, Kimberly Mayo, sixteen
great grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
There will be a Graveside Service at Connor-Green Cemetery in Hilliard, Florida,
Thursday, April 9, 2020 at 2:00 P.M.
The cemetery is on the road to St. George, Georgia near the Florida-Georgia border.
From Callahan, go south on CR 108 to CR 121. Turn left (south) on CR 2 towards St.
George. Before the river, turn right on dirt road to the cemetery. Due to the COVID-19
pandemic, we will be following the guidelines set in place by the CDC
recommendation of keeping 6 feet distance between each other as well as forego
embracing one another during this difficult time.
